Lovely hand painted porcelain brooch from the late Art Deco period has a black background that contrasts with a nicely painted reddish orange poppy flower. It has thicker painted accents in white and yellow. The little white flowers are also highlighted. Its leaves are attractively painted in greens and a light pinkish brown. The whole piece is trimmed in a wide band of gold with a flourish at the top.
Unlike many hand painted brooches on ceramic, it does not have a brass backing, and the reverse is plain. The pin mechanism was glued on, and glue residue is visible (it is straight, and pins easily). There is also a European style (French?) number with a dot or period impressed into the back (26.). Perhaps it is a blank size, or shape number.
The paint is in very good vintage condition with a darkened spot or two on the gold area visible on close inspection. It is a beautiful and special piece of miniature wearable art, c. 1940's.
SIZE: 2-1/16”W x 1-9/16”H
